As a little aside, I am finding it odd that the exciting and interesting Sicilian opening is a rarity at the Ballarat club. Rodney and myself have played the Scandinavian before, and I did have a good 'look' at some of its lines in the past, but Rodney had prepared a surprise for me already at move 4. It does not have a mention in my trusted, old opening books (Pachman 1964!). So, from here on I was on my own, spending oodles of time.} b5 5.Bb3 Bg4 6.Nf3 Nxd5 7.d4 e6 $14 8.a4 {(bas) I spent more than 10 minutes to decide which way to castle, how to develop my black bishop, and how to prevent 8...c5. If I allow c5, black will have very few problems. Hence, 8.a4..} b4! {(bas) Restricting white's development (eg. Na3, Nc3). On the long term, I was trying to find a way to isolate black's c-pawn, looking at 9.c4. I could not convince myself, that it would work.} 9.Qd3 c6 {(bas) not the best, I believe: Nd7 or Bd6 look more natural and developing moves bd6 is fritz16 choice and its equal jb} 10.Ne5 Bf5 11.Qf3 Qc7 {(bas) the more obvious 11..Nbd7 fails after 12.Nxf7!, Kxf7; 13.g4} 12.Nd2 Bd6 13.Ndc4 O-O {(bas) From here on the recurring option g4, followed by h4 comes into play. To apply it at this moment was rejected because of 14.g4, Bg6; 15.h4, Nf6! and what next? (bas)} 14.O-O? {(bas) Stockfish indicated that 14.Nxd6, Qxd6; 15.g4, Bg6; 16. h4 would work this time with +1.6 advantage. After the text move it is about equal.} Nd7 15.Nxd6 Qxd6 16.Nc4 Qc7 17.Bd2 N7f6 {(bas) 17...c5 was given as a good alternative by Stockfish, but I am not very convinced. Black's options on his next move Ne4 or Be4 gave me a lot of headaches, indicating to me that I was not travelling smoothly...} 18.Ne5 Ne4 19.Rad1 Rab8 20.Rfe1 {(bas) First 20.Bc1 to preserve the bishop, then 21.Rfe1 was stronger..} Nxd2 21.Rxd2 Rfd8? {move 21.. f6 is fritz16 first choice and black is ok jb (bas) the other rook Rbd8 would have been OK too (+0.5), leaving one rook on the f-file} 22.g4! {white is clearly better jb (bas) finally, the g4-h4 tandem works, and white is suddenly +1.9 upm and winning} Bg6 23.h4 Qe7? {(bas) mistake} 24.Nxc6 {(bas) a rare sight: a knight attacking the three major pieces all at once. After a long thought, I could not find any 'killer' moves after: 24.h5, Qg5; 25.hxg6, Qxd2; 26.?? So, I decided to take the safety-first route.} Qxh4 25.Nxb8 Qg5 {(bas) not the best move, with a whooping +6.5 advantage for white, but the better 25..Rxb8; 26.Re5 is also hopeless for black.} 26.Rde2 Bh5 27.Bxd5 Rxd5 28.Re5 Rxe5 29.Rxe5 f5 {(bas) a complete surprise to me, with only a couple of minutes on the clock.
