After the subtle slowboat action of the previous 35 moves, now the board suddenly erupted with three very unusual bomb-blasts from both sides. 36.Kh3, g6 37.Rb8, Kg7; 38.Qb7+,Kh7; 39.Rg8!. should bring Scott the hard-fought win. However, he only did he overlook this winning option, but also blundered and lost instead after playing 37.Qc3??.. Despite the late hour, Patrick was still alert enough to spot and engineer the miraculous escape-move 37...Qd1 (!!), It won him a rook and the game.
