When I re-joined the club in January, after many years of absence, I lost my very first two games against Jonathon Yates and James Brotheridge (Spielvogel 2015). Since those losses, I remained unbeaten during 23 games for 2 draws and 21 wins until now. Today my 'luck ran out', and I lost an interesting game. Peter played very well, and punished my atrocious endgame with a deserved win.} e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bb5 a6 4.Ba4 Nf6 5.O-O Nxe4 6.d4 b5 7.Bb3 d5 8.dxe5 Be6 9.c3 Be7 10.Be3 O-O 11.Nbd2 Nc5 {Thus far, both players did follow one of the established lines of the open system of the Ruy Lopes opening. My trusted and very old openingbook (Pachman 1965!) gives 4 alternative options, none of them blacks move though.} 12.Bc2 Nd7 13.Qe2 {(?) This poor choice of a move indicates that my thinking process was below par this evening: I was aware that my e-pawn was twice attacked,but I was convinced that it was unsound to take because of the following combination on h7, leaving blacks king vulnerable. Since white's queen was to be involved in that combination, why waste a quee-move instead of activating a rook to e1 first? At hindsight and keeping it easier (for me) I should have protected the e-pawn by 13.Bf4} Ncxe5!? {Peter, nevertheless goes for the pawn without much ado..} 14.Nxe5 Nxe5 15.Bxh7+ Kxh7 16.Qh5+ Kg8 17.Qxe5 {According to Fritz, Peter was more correct than I thought I was, and it gives him a decent advantage} Bd6 18.Qh5 Qd7 19.h3 Rfe8 20.Rfe1 g6 21.Qh4 {Black has weakened his king position a bit more and I now was quite optimistic at this stage. However, Fritz evaluates the positions as dead even..} Be7 22.Qg3 Bd6 { Black aiming for a draw by repetition?} 23.f4 c5! 24.Nf3 Bf5 25.Rad1 Be4 26.Ng5 Kg7 {From here on I spent heaps of time without finding any suitable plan to proceed with my attack.} 27.b4 {Not great at all: Better would have been: 27.Qh5, Rh8; 28.Qf2, Rc8; perhaps followed by the aggressive 29.g4} Qc6 28.Qh4 Rh8 29.Qf2 Rac8 30.a3 { White completely missed 30.Bd4!, cxd4; 31.Qxd4, f6; 32.Nxe4 and 33.Qxd6} Rhe8 31.g4? {I had only 5 minutes left (see later), had offered a draw on the previous move and I could have forced the draw by 31.Qh4, Rh8; 32.Qf2 etc, and yet I can't explain why I played the weak 31.g4?
