The appeal of playing rapid chess for me is that within a short timeframe one usually goes through a wide gamut of fluctuating emotions: shock, embarrasment, relief, high tension/pressure, sadness, and at the end elation and a deep sigh when it finally is over. Therefore, rapid chess is good and healthy for people, but I fear that chess itself is the victim. Generally, someone has to reassure me afterwards that I am not really such a bad chess player, as implied by my rapid (and blitz) disasters.
