1.d4 {Fred was a club member for many years. He was a genuine larger than life character. He hailed from Moyston, a Victorian town known for its World Rabbit Skinning Championship. He was a keen country poet, and a regular on ABC country radio, where he was known as Barry from the Bush. He was a friend of Ron Barrassi, a keen chess player.  Legend has it that he once played Barrassi a game of chess for a bet. Fred won, with the result that Barrassi, a giant of AFL football, came to speak for no charge at a local charity event. Fred had real presence in any room. At once garrulous, funny, outlandish, witty and decent, he was a very interesting fellow. We played a few friendly games at my home.
